In times like these, being a great boss can be harder than ever. If you want surprising and useful advice on how to handle the tough stuff — from having to fire a long-time employee to being a new boss with a demoralized team — the stories, observations, and advice contained in this gem of a book will set your feet in the right direction. And if you just want advice on living up to the legend who preceded you in the job, or even ways to emulate someone who was a great boss to you, Jeffrey Fox has gathered anecdotes from some of the mightiest and most respected bosses in America. The bestselling author who brought you How to Become CEO and How to Become a Rainmaker knows the territory about which he speaks. Fox is the master of the counterintuitive angle. For every boss who has implied “I know what’s best, that’s why I’m the boss,” Fox counsels, “Listen to Phonies, Fools, and Frauds” and “Don’t Check Expense Accounts.” His stories from bosses who have cared equally for employees’ lives and the bottom line will inspire you to see that profit counts, but so do camaraderie, motivation, and a great place to work. In a time of considerable corporate downsizing, it’s more important than ever for bosses to surround themselves with motivated employees. Jeffrey Fox’s newest volume will have a place on the shelves of top brass everywhere who want to remain leaders of their pack.

The Doctor Is In

The Doctor Is In

$9.99

DO YOU KNOW WHO THE GREATEST HEALTH GURU IN HISTORY IS? IT’S YOU. DR. TRAVIS STORK, popular host of The Doctors , will show you how to transform your own health in seven simple steps. As an emergency room physician, Dr. Travis Stork regularly sees the effects that poor lifestyle choices—the same decisions we face every day about what to eat and how active to be—have on our bodies over time. But just a few small tweaks to your daily habits can help you live longer and feel stronger. You can also conquer many chronic conditions—such as some of the biggest killers in America: heart disease, type II diabetes, and some cancers—before they happen. A lively, eye-opening guide, The Doctor Is In cracks the often-intimidating wellness code. You don’t need to follow the latest health crazes. Your power to save your own life is potentially thousands of times greater than that of any physician, wellness guru, or fitness expert. The secret is in seven easy, positive, and crucial steps that will help you change the way you think about diet, exercise, and the health care system. As he breaks down the building blocks for health into doable tips and action plans, Dr. Stork demystifies nutrition, exposes food fads, explains why you should be ruthlessly skeptical of health advice, and tells you which numbers you should track to keep yourself on the road to optimal wellness. Being healthy is an important and achievable goal no matter your age or fitness level. You already hold the key to a long and happy life. It’s time to put that power into action! DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER TO . . . • Increase your life expectancy by up to a decade or more? • Prevent or slow the development of many chronic and fatal diseases? • Lower your high blood pressure? • Reduce your risk of certain cancers? • Conquer and reverse obesity? • Potentially reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease? • Avoid spending many years and countless thousands of dollars on agonizing medical procedures, hospital stays, and medications due to preventable conditions?

How to Become a Scandal

How to Become a Scandal

$9.99

We all relish a good scandal—the larger the figure (governor, judge) and more shocking the particulars (diapers, cigars)—the better. But why do people feel compelled to act out their tangled psychodramas on the national stage, and why do we so enjoy watching them, hurling our condemnations while savoring every lurid detail? With “pointed daggers of prose” ( The New Yorker ), Laura Kipnis examines contemporary downfall sagas to lay bare the American psyche: what we desire, what we punish, and what we disavow. She delivers virtuoso analyses of four paradigmatic cases: a lovelorn astronaut, an unhinged judge, a venomous whistleblower, and an over-imaginative memoirist. The motifs are classic—revenge, betrayal, ambition, madness—though the pitfalls are ones we all negotiate daily. After all, every one of us is a potential scandal in the making: failed self-knowledge and colossal self-deception—the necessary ingredients—are our collective plight. In How to Become a Scandal , bad behavior is the entry point for a brilliant cultural romp as well as an anti-civics lesson. “Shove your rules,” says scandal, and no doubt every upright citizen, deep within, cheers the transgression—as long as it’s someone else’s head on the block.

How To Become Like Christ

How To Become Like Christ

$2.99

I suppose there is almost no one who would deny, if it were put to him, that the greatest possible attainment a man can make in this world is likeness to The Lord Jesus Christ. Certainly no one would deny that there is nothing but character that we can carry out of life with us, and that our prospect of good in any future life will certainly vary with the resemblance of our character to that of Jesus Christ, which is to rule the whole future. We all admit that; but almost every one of us offers to himself some apology for not being like Christ, and has scarcely any clear reality of aim of becoming like Him. Why, we say to ourselves, or we say in our practice, it is really impossible in a world such as ours is to become perfectly holy. One or two men in a century may become great saints; given a certain natural disposition and given exceptionally favouring circumstances, men may become saintly; but surely the ordinary run of men, men such as we know ourselves to be, with secular disposition and with many strong, vigorous passions – surely we can really not be expected to become like Christ, or, if it is expected of us, we know that it is impossible. On the contrary, Paul says, "We all," "we all." Every Christian has that for a destiny: to be changed into the image of his Lord. And he not only says so, but in this one verse he reveals to us the mode of becoming like Christ, and a mode, as we shall find, so simple and so infallible in its working that a man cannot understand it without renewing his hope that even he may one day become like Christ. Marcus Dods (1834 – 1909) was a Scottish divine and biblical scholar. He was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland (1843-1900). He was born at Belford, Northumberland, the youngest son of Rev. Marcus Dods, minister of the Scottish church of that town.

When Doctors Become Patients

When Doctors Become Patients

$43.98

For many doctors, their role as powerful healer precludes thoughts of ever getting sick themselves. When they do, it initiates a profound shift of awareness– not only in their sense of their selves, which is invariably bound up with the "invincible doctor" role, but in the way that they view their patients and the doctor-patient relationship. While some books have been written from first-person perspectives on doctors who get sick– by Oliver Sacks among them– and TV shows like "House" touch on the topic, never has there been a "systematic, integrated look" at what the experience is like for doctors who get sick, and what it can teach us about our current health care system and more broadly, the experience of becoming ill. The psychiatrist Robert Klitzman here weaves together gripping first-person accounts of the experience of doctors who fall ill and see the other side of the coin, as a patient. The accounts reveal how dramatic this transformation can be– a spiritual journey for some, a radical change of identity for others, and for some a new way of looking at the risks and benefits of treatment options. For most however it forever changes the way they treat their own patients. These questions are important not just on a human interest level, but for what they teach us about medicine in America today. While medical technology advances, the health care system itself has become more complex and frustrating, and physician-patient trust is at an all-time low. The experiences offered here are unique resource that point the way to a more humane future.

When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes: Memoirs of a Deaf Doctor

$6.11

At the age of four, Philip Zazove was speaking to his father, who turned away to replace some books on a shelf. Daddy , Philip cried, look at me when I talk! His father replied, and Philip said, What did you say, Daddy? His father turned around and repeated what he’d just said, Philip, I don’t have to look at you to hear you . Yes, you do. How else could you hear me? The question led to extensive tests that confirmed that, except for minimal hearing in the lowest range, Zazove was essentially deaf. Yet, he went on to lead a very active childhood, excelling in academics and athletics, even though he had to overcome barriers and wage battles every step of the way. In a time when interpreters and notetakers were nonexistent, Zazove compiled an exemplary record in high school and at Northwestern University in preparation of achieving his lifelong dream. Having decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps, both of whom were physicians, he intended to become a doctor himself. Despite his achievements in college, Zazove discovered that medical schools were not ready to welcome him with open arms. After enduring one rejection after another based upon his deafness and living with the frustration of seeing classmates with poorer records accepted at the same schools, he finally won entrance to Rutgers University Medical School. Again, he became one of the leaders in his class, making up for not hearing most of what was said in rounds with furious study, observation, and extra hard work. When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes in its very title hints at the kind of challenges that such ordinary things as hearing an alarm clock can present to a deaf person. On his way to becoming a respectedfamily practitioner (more new ground broken against the advice of his faculty), Zazove developed keen sensitivity to how his patients felt about their illnesses. Throughout his book, he relates anecdotes about his patients that evoke the full range of emotions related to life and death mat
