Clinical Trials And Clinical Research Studies On Cholesterol

Taking part in the clinical trials is a perfect way to take advantage of the latest research development being made in a particular field of medicine, even before the introduction of a new treatment to the general public. According to a survey, about 8 million people of America took part in the clinical trials of new medical devices and new drugs in the year 2003. Clinical trials and clinical research trials are being conducted for different medical issues including cholesterol.

Some of the advantages of taking part in the Medical Trial for high cholesterol are given below: -

  • You will be able to gain access to new drugs for cholesterol yet to be introduced in the market.
  • You will be able to receive the drugs free of cost from the trials.
  • You will be one among the first few patients receiving the treatment.
  • By participating in the Medical Trials, you will also be able to participate in the process of development of new treatments, which will be beneficial to you and your family members.
  • Some clinical research offers stipend for the people for traveling expenses.
  • Once if you participate in the trial, it is not essential that you should attend all further trials. You can withdraw at any time and for any reason.

If you are really interested in participating in a Clinical Research Study and clinical trial on cholesterol, you can follow the steps mentioned-below:

  1. Get the list of trials being conducted on cholesterol in your area and you can get this information online through search engines.
  2. Determine the trials that are presently recruiting patients to participate.
  3. Review the conditions they are meant to treat and the list of drugs being studied in that particular Medical Research trial.
  4. Discuss about the clinical research study selected by you with your family physician, who will be able to clarify you regarding the issues faced by you. If you are able to understand your medical condition with respect to cholesterol, you will be able to make the best decision with the help of your physician.
  5. After getting the advice of your physician, if you have decided to participate in the trial, you can call up the trial site and they will ask you some questions to judge whether you meet their basic requirements. If you meet their requirements, they will arrange for your visit to the site for an interview, where you will be asked questions regarding your health and they will also conduct blood tests and medical examination.
  6. Get acquainted with all aspects regarding cholesterol before joining the trial. The specialist conducting the trial should explain you all the information regarding the study.
  7. Clarify your doubts and get the explanation before singing the form of consent.

Tips for attending trials on cholesterol: -

  • Clearly understand the purpose of the trial and also see whether they compare the new treatment with the already existing treatment for cholesterol.

Get clarified about who will be paying you, if something goes wrong after or during the trial.

The Design of Studies for Medical Research

The Design of Studies for Medical Research

$39.99

The same careful rigour imposed on the design of phase III randomised controlled trials is not always applied to medical research in other areas such as trials conducted at earlier stages of drug development. . With the emphasis that is now placed on evidence-based medicine, such care and rigour will inevitably impact on these areas with increasing attention turned to the quality of design. . This title describes what principles can be used to structure research effectively allowing for the required degree of accuracy. Written by two best selling authors, this book includes many examples from medical literature and will be of great value to all groups conducting studies at the interface of clinical and laboratory research.

Handbook of Research in Social Studies Education

Handbook of Research in Social Studies Education

$103.48

This Handbook outlines the current state of research in social studies education – a complex, dynamic, challenging field with competing perspectives about appropriate goals, and on-going conflict over the content of the curriculum. Equally important, it encourages new research in order to advance the field and foster civic competence; long maintained by advocates for the social studies as a fundamental goal. In considering how to organize the Handbook, the editors searched out definitions of social studies, statements of purpose, and themes that linked (or divided) theory, research, and practices and established criteria for topics to include. Each chapter meets one or more of these criteria: research activity since the last Handbook that warrants a new analysis, topics representing a major emphasis in the NCSS standards, and topics reflecting an emerging or reemerging field within the social studies. The volume is organized around seven themes: Change and Continuity in Social Studies Civic Competence in Pluralist Democracies Social Justice and the Social Studies Assessment and Accountability Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines Information Ecologies: Technology in the Social Studies Teacher Preparation and Development The Handbook of Research in Social Studies is a must-have resource for all beginning and experienced researchers in the field.

These include issues involving organizational participants such as managers, teachers, customers, patients and clients, and transactions within and between organizations. In this new edition, chapter 19 now focuses on describing the modeling process and outcomes. An entirely new chapter 20 now addresses challenges to modeling. It goes substantially beyond a discussion of statistical inference. It also discusses issues in interpreting variance, explained estimates, and standardized and unstandardized regression coefficients. A new capstone chapter 21 helps students recognize good research. This textbook is accompanied by an Instructor’s Manual for course use.

Ethnic Studies Research: Approaches and Perspectives

Ethnic Studies Research: Approaches and Perspectives

$150.48

Study of ethnic groups and race relations have always existed in the academy, primarily in the areas of sociology and anthropology. However, grassroots movements for ethnic studies programs and departments came about with very different agendas for the study of these groups. It is surprising, then, that relatively few books devoted to these methods exist to document and promote this innovation among succeeding generations of graduate students, as well as current academics and professional practitioners. Ethnic Studies Research synthesizes and benchmarks ethnic studies methodologies as interdisciplinary modes of inquiry, providing state-of-the-art summary chapters on key methods and issues, extensive bibliographies, and promising new directions for the future.

Case Studies in Biomedical Research Ethics

Case Studies in Biomedical Research Ethics

$37.48

This textbook for instruction in biomedical research ethics can also serve as a valuable reference for medical professionals and bioethicists. The 149 cases included in the book are grouped in nine chapters, each of which covers a key area of debate in the field. Some of the case studies are classics, including the famous cases of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (in which subjects with syphilis were not given treatment) and the Willowbrook hepatitis studies (in which institutionalized subjects were intentionally exposed to hepatitis). Others focus on such current issues as human embryonic stem cell research, cloning by somatic nuclear transfer, and the design and function of institutional review boards. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction that places the issues raised in context; this is followed by a number of cases (each of which is no more than a few pages). Study questions meant to encourage further discussion follow each case. After an introductory discussion of the history and tenets of ethics in medical research, the book’s chapters cover oversight and study design; informed consent; the selection of subjects; conflicts of interest; the social effects of research; embryos, fetuses, and children; genetic research; the use of animals; and authorship and publication. Following these chapters are appendixes with the texts of the Nuremburg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki, two key documents in the establishment of bioethical standards for research. Also included are a glossary, a table of cases by general category, and an alphabetical listing of cases.

Heinecke, University of VirginiaDespite technology’s presence in virtually every public school, its documented familiarity and use byyouth outside of school, and the wealth of resources it provides for teaching social studies, there has beenrelatively little empirical research on its effectiveness for the teaching and learning of social studies. In aneffort to begin to fill this gap in research literature, this book focuses on research on technology in socialstudies education. The objectives of this volume are threefold: to describe research frameworks, provideexamples of empirical research, and chart a course for future research endeavors. Accordingly, the volumeis divided into three overarching sections: research constructs and contexts, research reports, and researchreviews. The need for research is particularly acute within the field of social studies and technology. As the primarypurpose of social studies is to prepare the young people of today to be the citizens of tomorrow, it isnecessary to examine how technology tools impact, improve, and otherwise affect teaching and learning insocial studies. Given these circumstances, we have prepared this collection of research conceptualizations, reports, and reviews to achieve three goals.1. Put forward reports on how research is being conducted in the field2. Present findings from well-designed research studies that provide evidence of how specific applications of technology are affectingteaching and learning in social studies.3. Showcase reviews of research in social studiesIt is with this framework that we edited this volume, Research on Technology and Social Studies Education, as an effort to address emerging concernsrelated to theorizing about the field and reporting research in social studies and technology. The book is divided into four sections. The first section ofthe book includes three descriptions of research constructs and contexts in social studies and technology. The second section is focused on researchreports from studies of student learning in social studies with technology. The third section containsresearch reports on teachers’ pedagogical considerations for using technology in social studies. In thefourth and final section, we present work that broadly reviews and critiques research in focused areas ofsocial studies and technology. This volume contains twelve chapters, each of which focuses on socialstudies content and pedagogy and how the field is affected and enhanced with technology. The volumeincludes research and theoretical works on various topics, including digital history, digital video, geography, technology use in the K-12 social studies classroom, and artificial intelligence.

The Critical Turn in Tourism Studies: Innovative Research Methodologies

The Critical Turn in Tourism Studies: Innovative Research Methodologies

$145.98

New approaches to tourism study demonstrate a notable ‘critical turn’ – a shift in thought that emphasises interpretative and critical modes of tourism inquiry. The chapters in this volume reflect this emerging critical school of tourism studies and represent a coordinated effort of tourism scholars whose work engages innovative research methodologies. Since such work has been dispersed across a variety of tourism-related and other research fields, this book responds to a pressing need to consolidate recent advances in a single text. Adopting a broad definition of ‘criticality’, the contributors seek to find ‘fresh’ ways of theorising tourism by locating the phenomenon in its wider political, economic, cultural and social contexts. The collection addresses the power relations underpinning the production of academic knowledge; presents a range of qualitative data collection methods which confront the field’s dominant (post)positivist approaches; foregrounds the emotional dynamics of research relations and explores the personal, the political and the situated nature of research journeys. The book has been divided into two parts, with the essays in the first part establishing a context-specific framework for engaging philosophical and theoretical debates in contemporary tourism enquiry. The second set of essays then present, discuss and critique specific methodologies, research techniques, methods of interpretation and writing strategies, all of which are in some sense illustrative of ‘critical’ tourism research. Contributors range from postgraduate students to established academics and are drawn from both the geopolitical margins and the ‘powerbases’ of the tourism academy. Their various relationships with the English-speaking academy thus range from relative ‘outsider’ to well-positioned ‘insider’ and as a result, their essays are reflective of a range of locations within the complexly spun web of academic power relations and social divisions. *Written and edited by leading researchers working in the wider field of tourism studies *Content is international in scope *Provides a cutting edge focus for those interested in tourism, particularly the management issues now facing decision-makers, policy analysts and the public sector

Studies in Anaphora

Studies in Anaphora

$145

The last 15 years has seen an explosion of research on the topic of anaphora. Studies of anaphora have been important to our understanding of cognitive processes, the relationships between social interaction and grammar, and of directionality in diachronic change. The contributions to this volume represent the “next generation” of studies in anaphora — defined broadly as those morpho-syntactic forms available to speakers for formulating reference — taking as their starting point the foundation of research done in the 1980s. These studies examine in detail, and with a richness of methods and theories, what patterns of anaphoric usage can reveal to us about cognition, social interaction, and language change.

Design Studies: Theory and Research in Graphic Design

Design Studies: Theory and Research in Graphic Design

$30.48

In an age of globalization and connectivity, the idea of ‘mainstream culture’ has become quaint. Websites, magazines, books, and television have all honed in on ever-diversifying subcultures, hoping to carve out niche audiences that grow savvier and more narrowly sliced by the day. Consequently, the discipline of graphic design has undergone a sea change. Where visual communication was once informed by a designer’s creative intuition, the proliferation of specialized audiences now calls for more research-based design processes. Designers who ignore research run the risk of becoming mere tools for communication rather than bold voices. "Design Studies," a collection of 27 essays from an international cast of top design researchers, sets out to mend this schism between research and practice. The texts presented here make a strong argument for performing rigorous experimentation and analysis. Each author outlines methods in which research has aided their design whether by investigating how senior citizens react to design aesthetics, how hip hop culture can influence design, or how design for Third World nations is affected by cultural differences. Contributors also outline inspired ways in which design educators can teach research methods to their students. Finally, "Design Studies" is rounded out by five annotated bibliographies to further aid designers in their research. This comprehensive reader is the definitive reference for this new direction in graphic design, and an essential resource for both students and practitioners.

Qualitative Research In Organizations and Management – Volume 2, Issue 3: Case Studies

$199

This ebook is a review of developments in both the qualitative tradition and case studies in management research. The articles discuss: the merits of unique cases and singular forms of evidence within a single case; the comparability of case studies with tools in other areas; and methods of theorizing from case studies. Readers may read each of the subsequent papers in this ebook, either as individual contributions that have merits per se, or as part of a collection. The merits of case studies have often been understated. The articles in this ebook highlight a broader variety of uses of case study research than is commonly recognized.

Racing Research, Researching Race: Methodological Dilemmas in Critical Race Studies

Racing Research, Researching Race: Methodological Dilemmas in Critical Race Studies

$22.48

A white woman studies upper-class eighth grade girls at her alma mater on Long Island and finds a culture founded on misinformation about its own racial and class identity. A black American researcher is repeatedly assumed by many Brazilian subjects to be a domestic servant or sex worker. Racing Race, Researching Race is the first volume of its kind to explore how ideologies of race and racism intersect with nationality and gender to shape the research experience. Critical work in race studies has not adequately addressed how racial positions in the field–as inflected by nationality, gender, and age–generate numerous methodological dilemmas. Racing Research, Researching Race begins to fill this gap by infusing critical race studies with more empirical work and suggesting how a critical race perspective might improve research methodologies and outcomes. The contributors to the volume encompass a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds including anthropology, sociology, ethnic studies, women=s studies, political science, and Asian American studies.

Through historical, critical, and analytical means, the volume reveals the symbiotic relationships between Ravel’s music and aesthetic, cultural, literary, gender, performance-based, and medical studies. While the chapters progress from French aesthetic-literary association, including Colette and Proust, to more extended disciplinary couplings, with American history, jazz, dance, and neurology, the organization is relatively free to enable other thematic links to emerge. The volume presents a refreshing variety of scholarly approaches to Ravel and his music, set within broad contexts and current musicological debates. In a Ravelian spirit, it is intended that the essays will serve collectively as a model for expanding the agendas of other composer-based studies.

Interdisciplinary research now receives a great deal of attention because of the rich, creative contributions it often generates. But a host of factors–institutional, interpersonal and intellectual–also make a daunting challenge of conducting research outside one’s usual domain. This newly updated and revised edition of Interdisciplinary Research is a substantive and practical guide to the most effective avenues for collaborative and integrative research in the social, behavioral, and bio-medical sciences. It provides answers to questions such as what is the best way to conduct interdisciplinary research on topics related to human health, behavior, and development? Which are the most successful interdisciplinary research programs in these areas? How do you identify appropriate collaborators? How do you find dedicated funding streams? How do you overcome peer-review and publishing challenges? This is the only book that provides answers directly from researchers who have carried out successful interdisciplinary programs. The editors give a concise of account of the lessons that can be taken from the book, and then present a series of case studies that reveal the most successful interdisciplinary research programs. These programs provide a variety of models of how best to undertake interdisciplinary research. Each of the chapter authors has carried out innovative, collaborative programs, and all give compelling accounts of the benefits of interdisciplinary research and the central strategies required to achieve them.

Power, Ethics, and Human Rights: Studies of Refugee Research and Action

Power, Ethics, and Human Rights: Studies of Refugee Research and Action

$39.48

Refugees experience some of the most visible manifestations of human rights abuses in the world today — and raise difficult issues for researchers and policy makers alike. This book investigates a broad range of complexities that arise as ethnographers work with refugee populations from different geographic areas in research, policy formation, and legal and social assistance. But the issues raised here have application to ethical concerns in ethnographic research beyond refugees. The contributors draw on their intensive fieldwork to explore issues surrounding power and disempowerment between researcher and subject; dilemmas over the protection of research informants; and the rights and actions of refugees in representing themselves and their cultures in advocacy and policy arenas. The wealth of important insights in this book sharpen our understanding of the problems faced in any cross-cultural research or intervention. These explorations revitalize, in vivid detail drawn from case studies, recent theoretical debates on anthropology and ethnographic research and practice, while raising new issues.

Scholarly Resources for Children and Childhood Studies: A Research Guide and Annotated Bibliography

$4.98

Editor Vibiana Bowman has drawn together contributions from some of the leading scholars in the interdisciplinary field of children and childhood studies (CCS) in this guided approach to literature searching in CCS. The contributors to this book are both faculty currently teaching in the area of CCS and academic librarians. The charge given to each contributor was to write a chapter that explained the process of scholarly research in his or her own particular area of expertise to a student unfamiliar with that discipline. Towards this end, the book provides background information about interdisciplinary study in general, and children and childhood studies in particular, as well as an outline of basic research practices. Each contributor serves as a mentor and suggests a search strategy, discusses significant concepts and vocabulary, and lists the major resources that scholars in that area would be expected to use. Not intended as en exhaustive list of in-print research resources, rather the emphasis throughout this guide is on useful resources and effective research methodologies. As the field of CCS continues to evolve in the upcoming years, Scholarly Resources for Children and Childhood Studies will serve as an excellent stepping stone for those just entering the area.

Research Methods: Uses and Limitations of Questionnaires, Interviews, and Case Studies

$19.48

Scholarly Paper aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft – Didaktik, Wirtschaftspadagogik, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 2.2 (B), 22 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: At the beginning of any type of research, it is important for the researcher to determine the most appropriate methodology to carry out the study. The Dictionary of Sociology (1998) defines methodology as a "the methods and general approach to empirical research of a particular discipline." It is implied that various methods exist to approach a particular research problem, and the researcher should give his or her own set of methods considerable thought. While factors such as time and costs certainly play an important part in deciding how to approach a particular research problem, the subject of the research itself should ultimately determine the methods used. A good researcher will evaluate all available options prior to making a decision as to which methods to adapt in the light of being the most useful for the study at hand.Scandura and Williams (2002) note that the impact of management studies often depends ‘upon the appropriateness of the research methods chosen’. This further highlights the importance the researcher needs to place at the selection of the right approach if the end-result is expected to be valuable and meaningful from a management perspective. When the most appropriate research method – or a mix of various methods – has been established, it is time to start what Gilbert (2001) calls detective work: "Social research involves detective work. You begin with a problem and then ask a number of questions about it, such as ‘what?’, ‘who?’, ‘where?’, ‘when?’, ‘how?’ and ‘why?’." A variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods are available to the researcher, ranging from interviews, questionnaires, observation, experiments, to case studies. This paper will focus on three of the above methods, namely questionnaires, interviews, and case studies

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies

$68.48

The most ambitious and broadly international collection on cultural studies ever published, this book is destined to shape research and teaching through the 1990s and beyond. It arrives at a time of high visibility for cultural studies but a time as well when cultural studies’ long oppositional history is in danger–particularly in the United States– of being taken up and assimilated into the ongoing, apolitical, academic enterprise. In an effort to disrupt this process, "Cultural Studies" interrogates the contemporary commitments of the field: its historical and intellectual positions, political and scholarly preoccupations, and the kinds of interventions it aims for now and in the future. Featuring essays by such prominent cultural theorists as Tony Bennett, Homi Bhaba, Donna Haraway, bell hooks, Constance Penley, Janice Radway, Andrew Ross, and Cornel West, "Cultural Studies" offers numerous specific cultural analyses while simultaneously defining and debating the common body of assumptions, questions, and concerns that have helped create the field. The topics addressed include race and minority discourses; ethnicity and postcolonialism; postmodernism; feminism; cultural policy; the place of history in cultural studies; the politics of representation; popular culture; aesthetics; ethics; and technology. At the same time "Cultural Studies" explores the cultural work performed by such diverse forms of cultural production as rock music, Chicano art, detective novels, African-American writing, the AIDS epidemic, architecture, reproductive freedom, "sati" Star Trek fandom, and New Age technology. Numerous contributors interrogate their own theoretical and methodological commitments, examining the place of representation, narrative, identity, language, and textual criticism in their work. "Cultural Studies" demonstrates that while the discipline remains fluid and even postdisciplinary, and while many of its practices remain academically marginalized and stubbornly resistant to institutionalization, cultural studies does have common commitments. In seeking to map the ways in which reality is socially constructed, and to understand and evaluate the conditions of social life, the contributors share a belief in the significance of struggles around gender, race, class, nation, and sexuality. And they share as well an interest in the conjuction between activist and academic projects. Many of the contributors, moreover, share a commitment to the history of cultural studies that this book aims to illuminate and postion for the future. Based in part on an extraordinary five-day conference at the University of Illinois, the collection supplements and comments on the essays themselves by transcribing extended discussions between participants. A landmark of cultural criticism intended for both general and academic readers, this collection is essential reading for students, scholars, and all contempo

Advances in Arsenic Research: Integration of Experimental and Observational Studies and Implications for Mitigation

Advances in Arsenic Research: Integration of Experimental and Observational Studies and Implications for Mitigation

$274.48

The realization during the last decade that many water supplies worldwide are affected by arsenic at concentrations above acceptable health levels has motivated research directed at understanding the occurrence, distribution, and mobilization of arsenic in the environment, and stimulated the development of new, cost-effective treatment technologies. Arsenic accumulation and migration is closely tied to its chemical speciation, which is often controlled by a complex combination of abiotic and biotic processes coupled with physical transport. This symposium volume focuses on bridging the gap between different approaches and scales of investigation and on fostering a more unified understanding of arsenic occurrence and behavior, including geological, geochemical, hydrological, microbiological, ecological, and engineering aspects of arsenic-related research. Papers in this volume highlight a variety of new research directed at understanding the sources, distribution, and mobilization of arsenic in the environment. It includes recent efforts in the development of cost-effective treatment technologies and in approaches to natural attenuation and accelerated remediation methods. These topics are thematically organized into three sections in the volume, the first focusing on laboratory studies and theoretical modeling, the second on arsenic behavior and cycling in a range of field settings, and the third on studies associated with treatment and remediation technologies and methods. This book is targeted at scientists and engineers (chemists, geochemists, geologists, hydrogeologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, chemical engineers, environmental engineers) as well as graduate studentswho are engaged in research on arsenic in both natural and engineered aqueous systems, and on the development of methods for arsenic treatment and removal.

Social Research

$28.99

Social Research: Theory, Methods and Techniques presents an understanding of social research practice through appreciation of its foundations and methods. Stretching from the philosophy of science to detailed descriptions of both qualitative and quantitative techniques, it illustrates not only `how' to do social research, but also `why' particular techniques are used today. The book is divided into three parts:. Part One: Illustrates the two basic paradigms – quantitative and qualitative – of social research, describing their origins in philosophical thought and outlining their current interpretations. Part Two: Devoted to quantitative research, and discusses the relationship between theory and research practice. It also presents a discussion of key quantitative research techniques. Shostakovich Studies 2

Shostakovich Studies 2

$90.48

When Shostakovich Studies was published in 1995, archival research in the ex-Soviet Union was only just beginning. Since that time, research carried out in the Shostakovich Family Archive, founded by the composer’s widow Irina Antonovna Shostakovich in 1975, and the Glinka Museum of Musical Culture has significantly raised the level of international Shostakovich studies. At the same time, scholarly understanding of Soviet society and culture has developed significantly since 1991, and this has also led to a more nuanced appreciation of Shostakovich’s public and professional identity. Shostakovich Studies 2 reflects these changes, focusing on documentary research, manuscript sources, film studies and musical analysis informed by literary criticism and performance. Contributions in this volume include chapters on Orango, Shostakovich’s diary, behind-the-scenes events following Pravda’s criticisms of Shostakovich in 1936 and a new memoir of Shostakovich by the Soviet poet Evgeniy Dolmatovsky, as well as analytical studies from a range of perspectives.

A Bilingual Concordance to the Targum of the Prophets: Isaiah II

A Bilingual Concordance to the Targum of the Prophets: Isaiah II

$70.35

The bilingual (Aramaic-Hebrew) concordance to the Targum of the Prophets is the product of an international project based in the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, Kampen (ThUK) and supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). With this publication a major research tool becomes available to those engaged in Biblical and Jewish Studies. For the first time meaningful quotations from the Targum and the Masoretic Hebrew text of the Bible are set out in parallel so that the user of the concordance can study the translation technique of the Targum in much greater detail than was hitherto possible. For comparative purposes the concordance is published per book of the Prophets. Eventually a complete concordance will become available in electronic form. The concordance makes a wealth of largely unknown material accessible to researchers. The discovery of the presumed-lost Song of the Lamb, referred to in Rev. 15:3, by members of the editorial team vividly illustrates the importance of such a concordance to both Judaic and New Testament studies. The concordance will also be an indispensable tool for the textual criticism and the history of interpretation of the Hebrew Bible. To facilitate consultation on the basis of the Hebrew, every concordance per book contains a Hebrew-Aramaic index. The final volume will contain additions and corrections, a cumulative Hebrew-Aramaic index, as well as an English-Aramaic index.

Sharot makes a substantial contribution to the maturation of the comparative sociology of religion. A distinctive feature of the book is its accent on popular religion, a much studied phenomenon these days . Martin Marty The many books on the world’s religions typically emphasize doctrine ( religion in the air ), while sociology of religion books typically emphasize behavior (religion on the ground ). Stephen Sharot does both in this masterful study, the product of many years of research. A Critique of Nicotine Addiction

A Critique of Nicotine Addiction

$206

Nicotine is almost universally believed to be the major factorthat motivates smoking and impedes cessation. Authorities such as theSurgeon General of the USA and the Royal College of Physicians in theUK have declared that nicotine is as addictive as heroin and cocaine. This book is a critique of the nicotine addiction hypothesis, based ona critical review of the research literature that purports to provethat nicotine is as addictive drug. The review is based on are-examination of more than 700 articles and books on this subject, including animal and human experimental studies, effects of nicotinereplacement therapies’, and many other relevant sources. This reviewconcludes that on present evidence, there is every reason to rejectthe generally accepted theory that nicotine has a major role incigarette smoking. A critical examination of the criteria for drugaddiction demonstrates that none of these criteria is met by nicotine, and that it is much more likely that nicotine in fact limits ratherthan facilitates smoking.

A Field Guide for Science Writers

A Field Guide for Science Writers

$21.95

This is the official text for the National Association of Science Writers. In the eight years since the publication of the first edition of A Field Guide for Science Writing, much about the world has changed. Some of the leading issues in today’s political marketplace – embryonic stem cell research, global warming, health care reform, space exploration, genetic privacy, germ warfare – are informed by scientific ideas. Never has it been more crucial for the lay public to be scientifically literate. That’s where science writers come in. And that’s why it’s time for an update to the Field Guide, already a staple of science writing graduate programs across the country. The academic community has recently recognized how important it is for writers to become more sophisticated, knowledgeable, and skeptical about what the write. More than 50 institutions now offer training in science writing. In addition mid-career fellowships for science writers are growing, giving journalists the chance to return to major universities for specialized training. We applaud these developments, and hope to be part of them with this new edition of the Field Guide. In A Field Guide for Science Writers, 2nd Edition, the editors have assembled contributions from a collections of experinced journalists who are every bit as stellar as the group that contributed to the first edition. In the end, what we have are essays written by the very best in the science writing profession. These wonderful writers have written not only about style, but about content, too. These leaders in the profession describe how they work their way through the information glut to find the gems worth writing about. We also have chapters thatprovide the tools every good science writer needs: how to use statistics, how to weigh the merits of conflicting studies in scientific literature, how to report about risk. And, untimately, how to write.

 A History Of Modern Indonesia

A History Of Modern Indonesia

$31.99

Although Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world, its history is still relatively unknown. Adrian Vickers takes the reader on a journey across the social and political landscape of modern Indonesia, starting with the country’s origins under the Dutch in the early twentieth-century, and the subsequent anti-colonial revolution which led to independence in 1949. Thereafter the spotlight is on the 1950s, a crucial period in the formation of Indonesia as a new nation, followed by the Sukarno years, and the anti-Communist massacres of the 1960s when General Suharto took over as president. The concluding chapters chart the fall of Suharto’s New Order after thirty two years in power, and the subsequent political and religious turmoil which culminated in the Bali bombings in 2002. Adrian Vickers is Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Wollongong. He has previously worked at the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Indonesia and Udayana University (Bali). Vickers has more than twenty-five years research experience in Indonesia and the Netherlands, and has travelled in Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Europe in the course of his research. He is author of the acclaimed Bali: a Paradise Created (Penguin, 1989) as well as many other scholarly and popular works on Indonesia. In 2003 Adrian Vickers curated the exhibition Crossing Boundaries, a major survey of modern Indonesian art, and has also been involved in documentary films, including Done Bali (Negara Film and Television Productions, 1993).

 A History of Curiosity

A History of Curiosity

$46.95

The author’s grasp of the vast, often obscure, but highly interesting body of literature which emerged in the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries commands the attention of a wide readership outside purely academic boundaries. Stagl weaves together a series of separate studies, emphasizing links between the figures, the philosophies and the literature of early modern times; links which have previously only been suspected. In focusing on the ars apodemica, or art of travelling, a body of formal instruction on how to travel, observe and record the information gathered, Stagl demonstrates the origins of the characteristic inquisitive and systematizing spirit of the modern West. A History of Curiosity examines the early methodology of anthropological and social research from a critical-historical perspective. The two principal methods of research, travel and the questionnaire, are studied in the context of the social conditions and intellectual trends of early modern times.

 A History of Modern Libya

A History of Modern Libya

$30.99

Libya is coming in from the cold, but for most of the three decades following Mu’ammar al-Qadhafi’s self-styled revolution in 1969, the country was politically isolated and labelled a pariah state. Dirk Vandewalle, one of only a handful of Western scholars to visit the country during this time, is intimately acquainted with Libya. He offers a lucid and comprehensive account of Libya’s past, and corrects some of the misunderstandings about its present. The story begins in the 1900s with a portrait of Libya’s desert terrain and the personalities that shaped its development. Professor Vandewalle then covers Libya’s history during the Italian colonial period (1911-1943) and the monarchy that ruled between 1951 and 1969. He goes on to discuss the subsequent regime of Colonel Qadhafi and the economic, political, and ideological developments that he engendered. Finally, he describes the most recent events that brought Libya back into the international fold. As the first comprehensive history of Libya over the last two decades, this book will be welcomed by scholars and students of North Africa, the Middle East, and by those who are visiting and doing business in the region. Diederik (Dirk) Vandewalle is Associate Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, and former chair of its Asian and Middle Eastern Studies program. His academic specialty focuses on the political economy of North Africa, and on strategies of political and economic liberalization in the region. Vandewalle is the author of Libya Since Independence: Oil and State-building ( 1998), editor of two volumes on Libya and North Africa, and author of numerous journal articles. He has received, among a number of awards, a Fulbrightand Social Science Research Council grant for his research, and has been a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Institute of International Development and at Harvard’s Center of Middle Eastern Studies.

The stresses caused by the rapid growth of biological knowledge and capability will sorely test democratic societies in the coming decades. A first step in coping with these strains must involve expanding the discussion of the issues and the pace of change beyond the tiny circle of biologists and businesspeople now involved. Enter Rabinow and Dan-Cohen, whose investigations of Celera Diagnostics, a company at the forefront of research in human genetic differences, open the concepts, practices, and institutions of this revolutionary world to broader public scrutiny. Imagine if Tracy Kidder had written The Soul of a New Machine about a genomic diagnostics company, and informed it with deep, scholarly insight into science, business, and leadership, and you begin to get the scope of this book. –Dr. Roger Brent, Director and President of The Molecular Sciences Institute This fascinating book opens up a huge number of questions about how social scientists, anthropologists, or science studies practitioners write about science, scientists, technology, and innovation. It offers some of the most sophisticated and detailed accounts to date of the complexity, serendipity, and unpredictability of the very kinds of scientific innovation that are often described as being deliberately planned to serve specific interests or normative values. It is packed with very original data, its analytical style and argument are very provocative, and it makes a very timely contribution to the field. I have never read anything like it. –Sarah Franklin, author of Embodied Progress: A Cultural Account of Assisted Conception This impressive book provides an accessible, frank, behind-the-scenes look atwhat is really likely from the much-hyped hope-inspiring mapping of the genome. A Poetics of Forgiveness

A Poetics of Forgiveness

$80

Despite recent interest in forgiveness and reconciliation, relatively little research has been conducted on forgiveness in literary studies. A Poetics of Forgiveness explores the profound links between creativity and forgiveness, and argues that creative production and interpretation can play a vital role in practices of forgiveness. Developing a model of poetic forgiveness through the work of Julia Kristeva, Jacques Derrida, and Kelly Oliver, A Poetics of Forgiveness asks how forgiveness is expressed in literature and other art forms, and what creative works can bring to secular debates on forgiveness and conflict resolution. Jill Scott explores these questions in a wide variety of historical and cultural contexts, from Homer”s Iliad to 9/11 novels, from postwar Germany to post-Apartheid South Africa, in canonical texts and in diverse media, including film, photography, and testimony.

Did you know that Idaho’s black bear are more active during the day than at night, that the bears diet is less than 2 percent meat and that the number of cubs born in the spring is related to the size of the fall berry crop? These are just a few of the facts the authors present about the black bear, a shy adaptable species whose secretive habits and preference for forested habitats has made it a difficult animal to observe. The authors have been collecting biological data since 1972 in order to develop a comprehensive management program for the state’s black bear population, and this volume summarizes much of their research. As the black bear’s range shrinks with man’s encroachment into isolated areas, studies such as this one offer scientists and naturalists the necessary data to make informed decisions about successfully managing this unique and irreplaceable species of American wildlife. This volume will provide naturalists and general readers with information on and a greater understanding of the rare and elusive Idaho black bear.

 A Study of Innovative Behavior

A Study of Innovative Behavior

$197.69

This study integrated several streams of research on the antecedents of innovation to test a model of individual innovative behavior in a high technology product development organization. The world we live in today is a globally competitive environment of rapidly changing technologies. Organizations must harness the innovative potential of their employees to create better and novel ways to solve old and new problems or risk becoming extinct. Innovative organizations can gain a competitive advantage over their less innovative competition through better products, faster product development times, and lower priced products. The research sample used in this study contained Product Engineers, Application Engineers, Lab Technicians, and Product Designers in an Engineering Department responsible for the development of high technology products. Various survey instruments were used to measure individual problem solving style, leader-member exchange, role expectation, and work climate. The Kirton Adaption-Innovation (KAI) inventory, which is used in many countries, was used to evaluate problem solving style. The KAI score is the summation of the three sub-factors, sufficiency versus proliferation of originality, preference for efficiency, and rule/group conformity. In previous use of the KAI in the general population respondents scored consistently high or low in each of the three KAI sub-groups. In this study, innovative people in the high technology product development organization did not follow this general population trend. Unlike previous KAI studies the innovative people indicated a preference for efficiency. This makes intuitive sense in that to be innovative in a complex hightechnology environment an individual must have a preference toward efficiency to keep the complex information organized. As the complexity of information required in a high technology product development organization increases so must the complexity of innovative people increase.(D.B.A. di

 A Translucent Mirror

A Translucent Mirror

$29.5

In this landmark exploration of the origins of nationalism and cultural identity in China, Pamela Kyle Crossley traces the ways in which a large, early modern empire of Eurasia, the Qing (1636-1912), incorporated neighboring, but disparate, political traditions into a distinctive style of emperorship. This groundbreaking study examines the relationship between the increasingly abstract ideology of the centralizing emperorship of the Qing and the establishment of concepts of identity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, before the advent of nationalism in China. Concluding with a broad-ranging postscript on the implications of her research for studies of nationalism and nation-building throughout modern Chinese history, A Translucent Mirror combines a readable narrative with a sophisticated, revisionary look at China’s history.

A Treatise on Painting by Leonardo Da Vinci

A Treatise on Painting by Leonardo Da Vinci

$22.34

1897. With a life of Leonardo and an account of his works by John William Brown. Leonardo da Vinci was a Florentine artist and one of the great masters of the High Renaissance. His most famous work is the Mona Lisa. He was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His profound love of knowledge and research was the keynote of both his artistic and scientific endeavors. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies- particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics-anticipated many of the developments of modern science. Evidence indicates that Leonardo had apprentices and pupils in Milan, for whom he probably wrote the various texts that are compiled into Treatise on Painting. Contents: The Life of Leonardo Da Vinci; Drawing-Proportion; Invention or Composition; Light and Shadow; Colors and Coloring; and Miscellaneous Observations.

Endorsements from Research Students: ‘I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting – it was really gripping stuff and I couldn’t put it down! I think you’ve got the mode of address exactly right, and immeasurably more so than what’s already on the market. I like the academic feel of it, as it implies you think your readers are intelligent adults, capable of understanding complex issues and wanting to make informed, considered decisions…’ ‘Thanks for your input.. about…PhD assessment/vivas. It made me aware of the sad experience that I went through in the 1980s when I undertook a part-time PhD…I had little contact with my supervisor …and had a viva without any preparation or information about what to expect. … I didn’t know of any appeal procedure until you mentioned it.’ ‘You manage to cover an enormous amount of ground, while, at the same time, being mindful of the need to provide a certain amount of depth on each issue you address’ This guide is designed to help women – since we are less likely than men to be encouraged to do doctorates, are slower to put ourselves forward, and tend to operate on the belief that (in academia at least) we will be judged solely on the quality of our work. This book will help women undertake and enjoy serious scholarly work whilst recognizing the wider ‘rules’ of the academic game. The author compares the current situation in the UK with that of North America and Australia, and discusses the pros and cons of PhDs and new professional doctorates. Thought provoking case studies of the diverse experiences of home and international, young and older, heterosexual and lesbian students across the disciplines make illuminating reading. This book is an essential read for women (and men) starting, midway through or finishing their doctorates.

AIDS on the Agenda: Adapting Development and Humanitarian Programmes to Meet the Challenge of Hivprogrammes to Meet the Challenge of HIV

$4.6

AIDS on the Agenda is written for policy makers, managers, and program staff in development and humanitarian agencies, to promote debate about the challenges that confront them in a world which has been changed for ever by the pandemic of AIDS. The book considers three possible responses to the problem: * Do nothing. * Try to specialize in direct AIDS work. * Adapt core programs and internal systems to respond to the impact of AIDS. The author argues for the third approach as the essential initial response. She shows how mainstream work in a wide range of sectors including food security, livelihoods support, education, health promotion, and emergency provision of water and sanitation can be modified to reduce susceptibility to HIV infection and vulnerability to the impacts of AIDS. She also offers practical advice on modifying personnel and financial systems to protect the interests of staff and the viability of organizations when operating in AIDS-prone contexts. The text is based on case studies drawn from the experiences of three agencies (ActionAid, Oxfam International, and Save the Children UK) and their partners; and on insights contributed by a wide range of other organizations. The problems inherent in the ‘mainstreaming’ approach are dealt with frankly and constructively. The comprehensive Resources section offers user-friendly guidance on the following topics: * Researching and predicting the internal impacts of AIDS * Assessing the impacts of AIDS education and awareness-raising * Drafting a workplace policy * Monitoring the impact of AIDS and of internal mainstreaming * Training for mainstreaming AIDS in development and humanitarian work * Undertaking community research formainstreaming AIDS in development and humanitarian work * Adapting organizational systems

Adaptability of Human Gait: Implications for the Control of Locomotion

Adaptability of Human Gait: Implications for the Control of Locomotion

$116.09

A large number of volumes have been produced summarizing the work on generation and control of rhythmic movements, in particular locomotion. Unfortunately most of them focus on locomotor studies done on animals. This edited volume redresses that imbalance by focusing completely on human locomotor behaviour. The very nature of the problem has both necessitated and attracted researchers from a wide variety of disciplines ranging from psychology, neurophysiology, kinesiology, engineering, medicine to computer science. The different and unique perspectives they bring to this problem provide a comprehensive picture of the current state of knowledge on the generation and regulation of human locomotor behaviour.A common unifying theme of this volume is studying the adaptability of human gait to obtain insights into the control of locomotion. The intentional focus on adaptability is meant to draw attention to the importance of understanding the generation and regulation of skilled locomotor behaviour rather than just the generation of basic locomotor patterns which has been the major focus of animal studies. The synthesis chapter at the end of the volume examines how the questions posed, the technology, and the experimental and theoretical paradigms have evolved over the years, and what the future has in store for this important research domain.

 Adhension Moleculars

Adhension Moleculars

$31.07

The consequences of diseases involving the immune system such as AIDS, and chronic inflammatory diseases such as bronchial-asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis, now account for a considerable economic burden to governments worldwide. In response there has been an enormous research effort investigating the basic mechanisms underlying such diseases, and a tremendous drive to identify novel therapeutic applications for their prevention and treatment. Though a plethora of immunological studies have been published in recent years, little has been written about the implications of such research for drugs development. As a consequence, this area has not gained the prominence of other fields such as molecular pharmacology or neuropharmacology, and a focul information source for the many pharmacologists interested in diseases of the immune system remains unpublished. The Handbook of Immunopharmacology series provides such a source through the commissioning of a comprehensive collection of volumes on all aspects of immunopharmacology. Editors have been sought after for each volume who are not only active in their respective areas of expertise, but who also have a distinctly pharmacological bias to their research. The series follows three main themes, each represented by volumes on individual component topics. The first covers each of the major cell types and classes of inflammatory mediators ( cells and mediators ). The second covers each of the major organ systems and the diseases involving the immune and inflammatory responses that can effect them ( systems ). The third covers different classes of drugs currently used to treat these diseases as well as those underdevelopment ( drugs ). This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the adhsion molecules, processes and concepts that govern both inflammatory and infectious diseases, and also deals in detail with the specific in vivo pathways involved. The first chapter introduces some of the mole
