what i have to do to become a doctor
Doctors, MED STUDENTS? what undergrad major to Become Doctor?

I am planning on Becoming A doctor (dermatologist or surgeon of some sort)
and I have absolutely no idea as to what Undergraduate major to choose.
Obviously, I should go into something related to Biology…

Doctors or Med students,, what undergrad major did you take?

I assure you that it doesn’t make the least bit of difference, not with the admissions process and not with how it will help you learn the material in med school. I was a biochem major but I’d say half the students had majors in the non-sciences. Everyone takes the same prerequisite science cores, so everyone has the same core knowledge. Beyond the basic cores, you really don’t need anything else, plus when you enter med school, they have a specific way in which they want you to learn the material, so learning it ahead of time is not necessarily to your advantage.

What Do I Say?

What Do I Say?

$9.99

Health care professionals, clergy, chaplains, social workers, and others who counsel people in medical crisis often find themselves faced with deeply painful questions: Why is this happening to me? Am I dying? Why should I live? I’m just a burden to others. Here is a workbook that suggests healing verbal responses to such expressions of spiritual pain. The accompanying DVD helps reinforce the lessons and exercises that integrate psychology, psychiatry, pastoral counseling, nursing, chaplaincy, and spiritual direction for whole person care. The author, an internationally recognized expert in spiritual caregiving, points out that wanting to help is one motivation for learning these skills, but there are also evidence-based reasons: helping patients express their innermost feelings promotes spiritual healing; spiritual health is related to physical and emotional health; spiritual coping helps patients accept and deal with their illness; and patients tend to want their health care professionals to know about their spirituality. Lessons, tips, and exercises teach how to listen effectively, with guidelines for detecting and understanding the spiritual needs embedded in patients’ conversations. Suggestions are provided for verbal responses to patients who express spiritual distress, including tips for building rapport, using self-disclosure, and praying with patients. A FAQ section deals with frequently asked questions and miscellaneous information, such as: What do I do when a patient talks on and on and I have to leave? How do I answer a "why" question? What do I say to a patient who believes a miracle will happen to cure them? What if I’m not religious? How can I talk about it? By practicing and using these healing techniques, Taylor explains, healthcare professionals will be able to provide patients responses to their questions that allow them to become intellectually, emotionally, and physically aware of their spirituality so they can experience life more fully.

What I Do

Alan Jackson had been a star for a long time before he released Drive in 2002, but that album turned him into a superstar, largely because it had the post-9/11 anthem “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),” a crossover smash that made Jackson a household name. Unlike some of his peers, he didn’t embrace this opportunity to become an omnipresent celebrity, he turned out a second greatest-hits album in 2003 — complete with another crossover hit in the Jimmy Buffett duet “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” — before returning with the full-length What I Do in September of 2004. Filled with straightforward, unadorned honky tonk and gentle, rolling ballads, What I Do makes it clear that Jackson doesn’t have the slightest interest in becoming a full-fledged, crossover country-pop star. This is the purest country album he’s cut in a long time, but what makes it one of his very best albums isn’t its purity, it’s how it’s delivered with a quiet confidence, a big heart, and a sly sense of humor. Jackson has backed away from any big social statements — there is a song called “USA Today,” but far from being a comment on either the state of the world or his celebrity, it merely tells the tale of “the loneliest man in the U.S.A. today” — and sings about love, heartache, churches, fixing cars, and wishing “If French Fries Were Fat Free.” As that last song suggests, he’s learned from his idol George Jones that even songs about heartbreak can be just as effective if delivered with a sense of humor, but the best joke here is “The Talkin’ Song Repair Blues,” where Jackson haggles with a mechanic who fancies himself a songwriter. Despite these moments of levity, much of What I Do is heavy on ballads. While it’s true that the loping drinking song “Strong Enough” and rip-roaring “Burnin’ the Honky Tonks Down” are so good it’s hard not to wish Jackson threw a few more ravers into the mix, each of these ballads works splendidly, whether it’s the sweet “Too Much of a Good Thing,” the gently supportive “There Ya Go,” or the aching “Rainy Day in June.” Given the preponderance of ballads and the laid-back delivery, What I Do has an intimate, relaxed feel, the polar opposite of a sequel to a blockbuster like Drive usually is. But instead of feeling like a retreat, What I Do feels like one of Jackson’s most assured and best albums, proof positive that he’s the best mainstream country singer of this decade. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Do You Have What It Takes to Become a Manager? a Guide for Those Driven to Lead!

$10.98

"This book was inspired by my concern that throughout my 34-plus years in the supervisor/management field, I only met a few managers who really knew how to manage others. It’s an artful skill and not just anyone can do it," says author George R. Kennedy.Do You Have What It Takes to Become a Manager? is a "how to" book written because the focus these days that "education is the best candidate has limited the number of very good experienced people who could really help the educated perform better."Making the jump from worker to manager is more difficult than most people think. It’s an important decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly. The book’s 12 chapters are designed as A Guide for Those Driven to Lead About the Author: First-time author George R. Kennedy is still active in rail transportation. Originally from Connecticut, he now resides in Arcadia, California.Publisher’s website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/DoYouHaveWhatItTakesToBecomeAManager.html

This was vague, but the more stimulating. What can compare with the bewitchment of arduous pursuit for uncertain privilege? There is an Orphean power well known to reside in testamentary documents, whereby the most insignificant legacy will draw the most imposing fortune to dance attendance upon its possession. But it is doubtful if Waldo Yorke, of Beacon Street, Boston, Massachusetts, would have found himself inspired to a personal investigation of his departed relative’s kind intentions concerning himself, but for a certain constitutional sensitiveness to this allurement attending the pursuit of unknown re- alia. 194295 "Send a lawyer, Waldo." If Man Made Machine’s Become doesn’t sound like a debut album, it may be because the five members of the hard rock band from Phoenix, Arizona, have known each other since elementary school and began playing together in high school. They are some years out of school now, however, and it was only a chance meeting with a music executive in a restaurant where bass player Justyn Sena was working that led to management and recording deals. But if the band sounds seasoned, it also reflects the older-but-wiser frustrations of not-so-young men wondering if their big break would ever come. “I was an angel at ten years, a devil at 17,” gruffly sings Joe Cotela in “Angels and Devils,” “Now I’m somewhere in between.” (“Lucky I’m still alive,” he adds.) He and his bandmates want to make it clear that they retain much of that devilish aspect, as Cotela proclaims himself a liar and a thief as a romantic come-on in the lead-off track, called, naturally, “Liar and a Thief.” Still, they feel victimized (“Victim”) and paranoid (“Paranoid”), and they have plenty of resentment to express, not only in Cotela’s voice, which occasionally ascends into a howl, but also in the aggressive rock playing that borders on heavy metal. That resentment sometimes seems self-directed as much as aimed at others, but either way, it fuels some well-played, if not particularly original rock music. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Joe Cotela – Vocals; Justyn Sena – Bass; Marc Hernandez – Guitar; Matt Reinhard – Drums; Steve Siminski – Guitar

When Doctors Become Patients

When Doctors Become Patients

$43.98

For many doctors, their role as powerful healer precludes thoughts of ever getting sick themselves. When they do, it initiates a profound shift of awareness– not only in their sense of their selves, which is invariably bound up with the "invincible doctor" role, but in the way that they view their patients and the doctor-patient relationship. While some books have been written from first-person perspectives on doctors who get sick– by Oliver Sacks among them– and TV shows like "House" touch on the topic, never has there been a "systematic, integrated look" at what the experience is like for doctors who get sick, and what it can teach us about our current health care system and more broadly, the experience of becoming ill. The psychiatrist Robert Klitzman here weaves together gripping first-person accounts of the experience of doctors who fall ill and see the other side of the coin, as a patient. The accounts reveal how dramatic this transformation can be– a spiritual journey for some, a radical change of identity for others, and for some a new way of looking at the risks and benefits of treatment options. For most however it forever changes the way they treat their own patients. These questions are important not just on a human interest level, but for what they teach us about medicine in America today. While medical technology advances, the health care system itself has become more complex and frustrating, and physician-patient trust is at an all-time low. The experiences offered here are unique resource that point the way to a more humane future.

What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOS

What to Do When the Doctor Says It’s PCOS

$4.98

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the number one cause of irregular periods and infertility in women – yet most gynecologists fail to diagnose it. The disorder causes irregular cycles, infertility, weight gain, acne, and unsightly hair growth — symptoms that can ultimately prove life-threatening as well as uncomfortable, humiliating, and emotionally disruptive. Only recently have women realized the danger lurking in what they thought were stress-induced problems. While researchers haven’t determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which can be controlled fairly easily with a low-carb diet. Most PCOS cases are diagnosed by reproductive endocrinologists when a woman’s infertility has led her to seek a specialist. "WHAT TO DO WHEN THE DOCTOR SAYS IT’S PCOS" gives sufferers a diet and nutritional treatment program that goes beyond the usual regimen of birth control pills and fertility drugs. The millions of women victimized by this debilitating and demoralizing disorder will undoubtedly welcome this new program as an alternative or as a supplement to their current treatment plan.

Supporting a loved one who is fighting a criminal charge can be one of the most stressful and frustrating times in your life, especially if you have no experience with the criminal court process yourself. It is hard to get basic advice about what to expect if you do not even know where to start. I have been practicing law for fourteen years, almost exclusively in the area of criminal defense. In that time, I have handled more than two thousand cases-over one hundred of which went all the way through trial-held countless motion hearings, and had more meetings with clients and their families than I can count. My experience and knowledge will guide you and hopefully help you avoid much of the worry that comes along with not knowing what will happen or how you can help.I will walk you through the entire criminal court process, from the 2:00 AM phone call alerting you that "something" just happened, to resolving the underlying criminal charge. By the end, you will be able to answer questions like: 1.When shouldn’t I bail someone out of jail?2.Should my loved one plead guilty at Arraignment3.What should I look for in an attorney? At various points, I will refer to examples using Washington State law. The laws in your state may be different. These examples both illustrate the points I’m making and will give you an idea of some possibilities for handling a criminal case. They will also serve as a starting point for your discussions with local attorneys.I have included a short glossary at the back of the book for some of the legal jargon you will run across in the legal system. By learning some of the more important terms now, you will avoid some of the confusion that comes with an unfamiliar system, like Court. It’s tempting to think that nothing good can come out of facing a criminal charge. However, this may be the wake up call you and your loved one needed, especially if you did not realize that a problem existed. After all, you can’t fix a problem until you know one exists.

Do As I Say (Not As I Do)

Do As I Say (Not As I Do)

$9.99

“I don’t own a single share of stock.” —Michael Moore Members of the liberal left exude an air of moral certitude. They pride themselves on being selflessly committed to the highest ideals and seem particularly confident of the purity of their motives and the evil nature of their opponents. To correct economic and social injustice, liberals support a whole litany of policies and principles: progressive taxes, affirmative action, greater regulation of corporations, raising the inheritance tax, strict environmental regulations, children’s rights, consumer rights, and much, much more. But do they actually live by these beliefs? Peter Schweizer decided to investigate in depth the private lives of some prominent liberals: politicians like the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, the Kennedys, and Ralph Nader; commentators like Michael Moore, Al Franken, Noam Chomsky, and Cornel West; entertainers and philanthropists like Barbra Streisand and George Soros. Using everything from real estate transactions, IRS records, court depositions, and their own public statements, he sought to examine whether they really live by the principles they so confidently advocate. What he found was a long list of glaring contradictions. Michael Moore denounces oil and defense contractors as war profiteers. He also claims to have no stock portfolio, yet he owns shares in Halliburton, Boeing, and Honeywell and does his postproduction film work in Canada to avoid paying union wages in the United States. Noam Chomsky opposes the very concept of private property and calls the Pentagon “the worst institution in human history,” yet he and his wife have made millions of dollars in contract work for the Department of Defense and own two luxurious homes. Barbra Streisand prides herself as an environmental activist, yet she owns shares in a notorious strip-mining company. Hillary Clinton supports the right of thirteen-year-old girls to have abortions without parental consent, yet she forbade thirteen-year-old Chelsea to pierce her ears and enrolled her in a school that would not distribute condoms to minors. Nancy Pelosi received the 2002 Cesar Chavez Award from the United Farm Workers, yet she and her husband own a Napa Valley vineyard that uses nonunion labor. Schweizer’s conclusion is simple: liberalism in the end forces its adherents to become hypocrites. They adopt one pose in public, but when it comes to what matters most in their own lives—their property, their privacy, and their children—they jettison their liberal principles and embrace conservative ones. Schweizer thus exposes the contradiction at the core of liberalism: if these ideas don’t work for the very individuals who promote them, how can they work for the rest of us? From the Trade Paperback edition.

"It is the noblest of professions and the meanest of trades, ” said Dr. Maurice Cavallo to himself, " and if that is the way old Father Hippocrates found it what can a fellow expect in these degenerate days?" and so saying, he drew forth a match, searched in his pockets, found a cigar, and lighting it, proceeded to pour forth a cloud of smoke. In this occupation he was standing before his window contemplating the street and watching it rain, when he saw Bob Lawrence go by and he hastily knocked on the window to attract his attention. That individual, on seeing who it was that was calling to him, stopped, closed his umbrella, and soon could be heard stamping up stairs. He opened the office door, stood his umbrella up in a corner where the surplus water would run into a tin basin in which the Doctor had "a culture." Dr. Cavallo started at first to stop him, but as the special bacteria had long since died out, a result of too much crowding, he desisted, and watched the other settle himself in a chair, pull a cigar out of his pocket, light it, and then fish around for a match. This found, he joined in, and they steadily sent out a cloud of smoke together. Finally, the Doctor found time to put the question that he had been aching to ask and yet hesitated from some unaccountable impulse to do. "How is your sister?" "Oh," said Bob, "she is all right; no worse since you dismissed the case. Ugly thing this diphtheria. Do you know that I had half a notion to be a doctor myself? Seidel talked so much to me about it that I had a great mind to become a ‘dig’ and try for a profession." Cavallo laughed. " Let me congratulate you on your escape." "Oh yes," said Bob, "I know all about it. Settle in some town, go in and physic the poor; treat everybody, pay or no pay…

What Did I Do?

Cristina Williams may live in New York City, but her roots lie in Jacksonville, FL, and her Cuban-American upbringing. On her debut, What Did I Do?, Williams melds the hip gutsiness of New York with blues, Memphis soul, reggae, and the singer/songwriter tradition to craft an eclectic but strong set that would fit nicely alongside Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, and Tracy Chapman. The emotional “Make You Happy” pairs shuffling reggae grooves with Phil Spector-style Wall of Sound choruses. “Ties That Bind” is reminiscent of mid-period R.E.M. and “Florida Girl” has a folky simplicity like the Indigo Girls — the two tracks establish Williams’ musical ancestry in the Southern alternative rock & roll scene. What Did I Do? may not have the resonance of the first Indigo Girls album or the catchiness of Sarah McLachlan, but fans of both will not be disappointed by Williams’ combination of dreamy pop and grounded rock traditions. ~ Charles Spano, Rovi Performers: Julia Kent – Cello; Christine Williams – Guitar, Vocals; Danny Green – Bass; Heather Hardy – Violin; Rob Ellis Karten – Keyboards

This Is What I Do

When it comes to picking material, today’s young hard boppers (both instrumentalists and singers) could learn a lot from Sonny Rollins — a tenor titan who has always had a way of surprising us with interesting, unexpected choices. Over the years, he hasn’t made the mistake of limiting himself to overdone Gershwin and Cole Porter favorites; Rollins doesn’t exclude well-known standards by any means, but he has also made a point of interpreting a lot of material that other hard boppers have ignored (and that has included everything from forgotten show tunes to Stevie Wonder gems). True to form, the saxman continues to make interesting choices on This Is What I Do, which was recorded in 2000 and finds a 69-year-old Rollins joined by Clifford Anderson on trombone, Stephen Scott on acoustic piano, Jack DeJohnette or Perry Wilson on drums, and long-time companion Bob Cranshaw on electric bass. The CD’s only real standard is the ballad “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” — the other selections range from Rollins originals (which include the funky, playful “Did You See Harold Vick?” and the calypso-minded “Salvador”) to forgotten songs from 1937 movies. “Sweet Leilani” (which the seminal Bing Crosby defined) is from the film Waikiki Wedding, while “The Moon of Manakoora” is from The Hurricane (which starred Dorothy Lamour). Neither are tunes that have been done to death by hard boppers, and Rollins has no problem showing us that they can be relevant to jazz. This Is What I Do falls short of essential, but it offers some nice surprises and is a rewarding addition to Rollins’ huge catalog. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Bob Cranshaw – Bass (Electric); Clifton Anderson – Trombone; Jack DeJohnette – Drums; Perry Wilson – Drums; Sonny Rollins – Sax (Tenor); Stephen Scott – Piano

What Should I Do with My Life?

“Brimming with stories of sacrifice, courage, commitment and, sometimes, failure, the book will support anyone pondering a major life choice or risk without force-feeding them pat solutions.” — Publishers Weekly What should I do with my life? It’s a question many of us have pondered with frequency. Author Po Bronson was asking himself that very question when he decided to write this book—an inspiring exploration of how people transform their lives and a template for how we can answer this question for ourselves. Bronson traveled the country in search of individuals who have struggled to find their calling, their true nature—people who made mistakes before getting it right. He encountered people of all ages and all professions—a total of fifty-five fascinating individuals trying to answer questions such as: Is a career supposed to feel like a destiny? How do I tell the difference between a curiosity and a passion? Should I make money first, to fund my dream? If I have a child, will my frustration over my work go away? Should I accept my lot, make peace with my ambition, and stop stressing out? Why do I feel guilty for thinking about this? From their efforts to answer these questions, the universal truths in this book emerge. Each story in these pages informs the next, and the result is a journey that unfolds with cumulative power. Reading this book is like listening in on an intimate conversation among people you care about and admire. Even if you know what you should do with your life, you will find wisdom and guidance in these stories of people who found meaningful answers by daring to be honest with themselves. Among them: -the Pittsburgh lawyer who decided to become a trucker so he could savor the moment and be closer to his son. -the toner-cartridge queen of Chicago, who realized that her relationships with men kept sabotaging her career choices. -the Cuban immigrant who overcame the strong dis-approval of her parents and quit her high-paying job to pursue social-service work in Miami. -the chemistry professor who realized, quite late in life, that he would rather practice law. -the mother torn between an Olympic career and her adolescent daughter. -the seventeen-year-old boy who received a letter from the Dalai Lama and was called to a life of spiritual leadership. -the creator of St. Elmo’s Fire, who wasn’t sure he could quit his successful Hollywood life for the deeper artistic life he had always wanted to pursue. -the author himself. Po Bronson has worked as a bus-boy, cook, janitor, sports-medicine intern, bus-lift assembly-line technician, aerobics instructor, litigation consultant, greeting-card designer, bond salesman, political-newsletter editor, high school teacher, and book publisher. Since then, he has written three books: Bombardiers , The First $20 Million Is Always the Hardest , and The Nudist on the Late Shift . But none of those experiences compared

Nuclear Waste; What to Do with It?

$18.98

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: hundred years are strontium-90 and cesium-137. Certainly these two must be kept out of the biosphere as completely as possible. After about 500 years ? the figure is a little indefinite but it’s on that order ? both elements will have decayed far enough so that they are no longer a problem. Thereafter the radioactivity of the waste is confined largely to the heavy actinide elements and the daughter products that result from their radioactive decay. These elements, of course, are still dangerous. They would be especially dangerous if, by some strange accident, a repository should be split wide open and its contents exposed to the air so that dust containing actinide elements could become airborne. A situation that would lead to this kind of accident, however, is difficult to imagine. If the actinide elements and their daughters stay in the repository, most of their compounds are very insoluble and would not be picked up by ground water to any appreciable extent. The small amounts that did dissolve would be largely adsorbed on mineral surfaces as the ground water moved. Therefore it seems to me that these elements, which have very long half lives and which will continue to emit relatively feeble radiation for periods of hundreds of thousands or millions of years, do not constitute a very great danger. The intensity of radiation from waste, in fact, after about a thousand years is little greater than that from the radioactive material of a medium-grade uranium ore deposit. This is why, like Congressman McCormack, I pick a figure of 500 to 1000 years as the time during which isolation of the waste is most essential. This becomes a very important point. If we have to design a repository that will isolate the waste for a million years, we face a very difficult geologic problem….

I Have QuickBooks, Now What?

I Have QuickBooks, Now What?

$29.95

There are many QuickBooks instruction guides out in circulation, but there is only one that answers the questions for the less-educated entrepreneur. Most instruction guides are made to explain QuickBooks in a way that expects the reader to have knowledge in accounting and to understand their language. The other 70% of the US small businesses don’t understand the translation but still need someone to show them in a simple way. They seem to be left behind. “I have QuickBooks, Now What?" is the only book that takes you from point A to point B, translating the language barrier in Laymen’s Terms for the self employed business owner. Most small business owners focus more on their service or product and don’t know what a debit or credit is, and they don’t know what to enter into QuickBooks to set it up. It answers that exact question, ‘Now What?’ What documents do I need to set up my accounting, what do the reports mean, why is it so important to have a budget, and how do I get one? It was not written for the Harvard Graduate or the Executive, it was written for the small business people who will relate to ‘Joe Standard’ without feeling like an idiot in the process. Include are over 340 pages of basic bookkeeping instructions with templates and explanations. Throw in the Authors sense of humor and a little bit of sarcasm, and you’ll find that it’s impossible to be bored with accounting when reading this book. Author Julie A. Mucha Aydlott is Certified Fraud Examiner, and the owner of San Diego Business Accounting Solutions, a Non CPA Firm that specializes in small business accounting and fraud investigations. She has Over 18 years of experience in Accounting and Bookkeeping.

Michel de Montaigne wrote his Essais in France in the 16th century and since then no-one has surpassed his skill at supposition irony and enquiry. Now ex-BBC and One Word Radio producer Paul Kent takes on his hero"s mantle to speculate on what Montaigne might have made of the modern world. While introducing the general reader to the works and approach of the great man Kent takes the opportunity to look at modern phenomena – everything from booze and celebrity culture to government sport and the arts – and to give them all the same quizzical self-deprecating analysis that Montaigne himself might well have done.

When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes: Memoirs of a Deaf Doctor

When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes: Memoirs of a Deaf Doctor

$6.11

At the age of four, Philip Zazove was speaking to his father, who turned away to replace some books on a shelf. Daddy , Philip cried, look at me when I talk! His father replied, and Philip said, What did you say, Daddy? His father turned around and repeated what he’d just said, Philip, I don’t have to look at you to hear you . Yes, you do. How else could you hear me? The question led to extensive tests that confirmed that, except for minimal hearing in the lowest range, Zazove was essentially deaf. Yet, he went on to lead a very active childhood, excelling in academics and athletics, even though he had to overcome barriers and wage battles every step of the way. In a time when interpreters and notetakers were nonexistent, Zazove compiled an exemplary record in high school and at Northwestern University in preparation of achieving his lifelong dream. Having decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps, both of whom were physicians, he intended to become a doctor himself. Despite his achievements in college, Zazove discovered that medical schools were not ready to welcome him with open arms. After enduring one rejection after another based upon his deafness and living with the frustration of seeing classmates with poorer records accepted at the same schools, he finally won entrance to Rutgers University Medical School. Again, he became one of the leaders in his class, making up for not hearing most of what was said in rounds with furious study, observation, and extra hard work. When the Phone Rings, My Bed Shakes in its very title hints at the kind of challenges that such ordinary things as hearing an alarm clock can present to a deaf person. On his way to becoming a respectedfamily practitioner (more new ground broken against the advice of his faculty), Zazove developed keen sensitivity to how his patients felt about their illnesses. Throughout his book, he relates anecdotes about his patients that evoke the full range of emotions related to life and death mat
